Connect with Your Community: Communication Strategies that Work

This workshop will give local government officials the knowledge and skills needed to establish a social media presence, build an effective working relationship with local media and encourage community involvement by promoting citizen participation. 

Course topics include:

  • Using social media to connect with your community;
  • How the news media operates – what makes a story;
  • What to say (and not to say) during an interview; and
  • What to include in a media policy and how to train staff.
  • Attendees will gain an understanding of the role events, town hall style meetings and other opportunities present for interpersonal interaction. The workshop will also cover how a website, social media, interpersonal and traditional media can all work together to inform and engage.
