New CDC Masking Guidance: Governor Brown Announces Shift in State Policy

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and President Biden announced Thursday that fully vaccinated individuals no longer need to wear a mask or socially distance in outdoor and most indoor settings. A person is fully vaccinated 14 days after receiving either the  Johnson & Johnson or the second dose of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines.  Shortly after the CDC announcement, Oregon Governor Kate Brown issued a statement via video indicating that Oregon is adopting a similar standard.  The Oregon Health Authority provided written guidance outlining the new standards, and additional updates for employers and businesses will be available in the coming days. While confirming a customer or guest’s vaccinated status may be problematic, employers may require an employee provide proof before allowing them to unmask.  City leaders should consult their human resources professionals and city attorneys, as well us any additional guidance from the regulatory agencies, when enacting new policies.
