Council meetings are the official venue for the elected officials to conduct the business of the  people. Oregon has specific laws that govern public meetings and the responsibility elected officials have to the public. It is essential that elected officials have an understanding of these laws. Additionally, individual city charters may have additional rules that govern council decisionmaking and processes. Each council meeting should be open to the public and provide a space for residents to comment on topics discussed.
