Age Discrimination Bill Heard in Committee
Legislation seeking to strengthen Oregon’s age discrimination law was heard in the House Committee on Business and Labor this week. HB 2800, sponsored by Representative Nathan Sosa (D-Hillsboro), prohibits language in job postings that indicates a preference for a candidate of a certain age and bars adverse employment actions based on age. The bill, which is supported by the American Association of Retired Persons, is intended to prevent employment discrimination against older workers. However the LOC analysis of the bill’s language finds that its crafting would likely lead to significant unintended consequences. The LOC expressed its concerns with the bill as it is likely to cause significant complications for cities as employers.
