Guidance Published to Address Risks of Stagnant Water Contamination

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) and the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) have published a guide to help address potential water contamination resulting from businesses, schools and other buildings that have experienced reduced or no water use during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cities and other public drinking water utility providers may want to engage in outreach to local businesses, property owners and managers, encouraging that they take steps to avoid health risks associated with stagnant water from prolonged closures. Stagnant or standing water in private drinking water lines can cause conditions that increase the risk for growth and spread of Legionella and other bacteria. In addition to the AWWA/IAPMO guide, the Oregon Health Authority, which regulates public drinking water systems in Oregon, has provided guidance on how businesses can minimize risks from Legionella and other bacteria. For additional guidance, including industry-specific recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), visit the CDC website.
