Senate Republicans to Return Saturday

After walking out of the Capitol and leaving the state June 20 to protest HB 2020 (carbon bill), Senate Republicans are expected to return to the Capitol Saturday morning  to conclude business for this session. Senate Minority Leader Herman Baertschiger announced the expected return at a news conference Friday morning.

It is anticipated the Senate will pass a series of agency budgets and policy bills this weekend.  Earlier this week, the LOC presented Senate leadership and key members of the Legislature with a list of 19 agency budgets and policy bills that are critical for cities.

The catalyst for Saturday’s expected return was Tuesday’s announcement by Senate President Peter Courtney (D-Salem) on the Senate floor  that there were not enough democratic votes (16) to move HB 2020 off the floor.  A negotiated return-agreement between Senate republican and democratic leaders hinged on assurance from Sen. Peter Courtney that HB 2020 would not pass the Senate floor, which would effectively kill the bill for this session.
