OLCC Begins Discussion on Minimum Pricing

At its January meeting, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) received a report from its senior staff on plans to create a minimum price for bottles sold in liquor stores.

According to OLCC staff, there are 41 items in the OLCC inventory, out of approximately 9,500, that hold 750 milliliters and are 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof).  These items sell for $6.39, and account for 15% of sales.

There is growing recognition that items sold at this price point have negative impacts on public health and safety and are underpriced .

The OLCC expects to produce a written plan creating a minimum price and will then accept public comments.

Curtailing excessive alcohol consumption is a component of the LOC’s legislative priority on mental health, and the LOC is supportive of creating a minimum alcohol price.
