OPUC Begins Permanent Wildfire Rulemaking

Starting next week, the Oregon Public Utility Commission (OPUC) will be conducting workshops on wildfire prevention and mitigation.  The first workshop will deal with fire risk assessment and will be held on June 14, with subsequent meetings covering emergency power shut-offs, vegetation management, infrastructure hardening and public engagement.

The goal of the workshops will be to develop permanent rules for adoption in the first quarter of 2022 that will mitigate the risk to life and property from utility-ignited wildfire. While the rules being considered won’t take effect until 2022, temporary rules on power shut-offs have been adopted previously that will protect communities in the current fire season.
