OSHA Rule Comment Deadline Extended; Cities Should Prepare

The Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has extended the comment deadline on its latest proposed rules from August 31 until September 7.

As noted in last week’s LOC Bulletin, OSHA has proposed rules on social distancing in the workplace and ensuring that workers are separated and protected during the current COVID-19 crisis.  While aspects of proposed rules may change due to public comment, it’s likely that aspects mandating physical barriers and face coverings will be adopted.  Cities are strongly encouraged to read the proposed rules and order the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as soon as possible.

The LOC anticipates that the rules will take effect on September 14 for all employers, and PPE may be in short supply as employers seek to achieve compliance.

A webinar provided by the National League of Cities has details about an opportunity for cities to purchase PPE through a new national purchasing agreement.
