Several Legislators Announce Departures
Its not uncommon to see a legislator leave office - it happens every election cycle. This week, two key members of the coastal caucus have called it a career. Sen. Arnie Roblan (D–Coos Bay) announced his departure from the Senate, and Rep. Caddy McKeown (D-Coos Bay) is stepping away from the House. Both legislators brought a very important voice to the Legislature and showed a consistent willingness to balance impacts of proposed legislation to their communities. This is a big hit to the coastal communities in and around Coos Bay.
This news was followed up by the announcement from Sen. Cliff Bentz (R-Ontario) of his pending resignation effective January 30, 2020. The announcement was expected, but not until after the short session in February. Sen. Bentz has filed for Rep. Greg Walden’s congressional seat, but due to rules of the Oregon Legislature would have been limited to raising funds for his campaign, thus reducing his ability to get enough resources to mount a competitive campaign for the spring primary.
In addition, a significant group of legislators are not expected to return after the 2020 session, including: Sen. Laurie Monnes Anderson (D-Gresham); Sen. Mark Hass (D-Beaverton); Rep. Jennifer Williamson (D-Portland); Rep. Carla Piluso (D-Gresham); Rep. Jeff Barker (D-Aloha); Rep. Carl Wilson (R-Grants Pass); Rep. Sherrie Sprenger (R-Scio) and Rep. Greg Baretto (R-Cove).
