Third Party Building Officials Legislation Awaits Governor's Signature

Following three years of work, countless hours of testimony, and an advisory group to boot, SB 866 is expected to receive support before the legislative session wraps up this weekend

SB 866 resolves a three-year debate over the use of contracted building officials with a series of additional safeguards for local governments to meet in order to keep their programs.

On Wednesday there was one last effort to alter SB 866 by Representative Paul Holvey, who dropped a -1 amendment the night before the House Rules Committee moved the bill to the House floor.  The amendment would have inserted HB 2420 from the 2019 session, which would have all but ended the third-party building official program. The -1 amendment was not advanced, and the committee moved the bill to the House floor for a vote. Representative Gomberg carried the bill on the floor and was able to motivate 48 other House members to support the bill.
