Export Tax Dropped from Washington State Proposal
Earlier this week, legislators in Washington state passed an amendment dropping the proposed $.06 per gallon export tax from SB 5974. All states outside of Washington would have effectively paid for that state’s infrastructure projects with the export fuel tax in place. As reported in last week’s LOC Bulletin, the LOC, the Association of Oregon Counties, and our counterparts in Alaska and Idaho authored a letter to Washington Governor Jay Inslee opposing the export fuel tax in SB 5974. A combination of these efforts helped provide momentum which led to Washington’s House leadership dropping the tax. Although there remains disagreement from the Senate to drop the export fuel tax, we expect the recent conference committee to find a solution for the transportation package that does not include an export tax.
