Grant Writing Basics Workshop

Speaker:  Laura Prado, Senior Fundraising Specialist

This workshop introduces the world of grant writing and covers all aspects of preparing a grant, including preparing budget forms, writing a compelling narrative, compiling attachments, and more. The workshop is presented over three 2-hour sessions on Zoom and will cover the following topics:

Session 1: Introduction, Budgets, and Budget Narrative. This session begins with an examination of the language used by grantors and grant writers to lay a foundation for the remaining sessions. The session then transitions into preparing the budget, including different types of budgets and forms, federal grant categories, calculating the matching funds, and common mistakes to avoid. The session ends with a discussion of the budget narrative and how to justify the expenses in the proposed budget.

Session 2: The Narrative. The second session focuses on all grant narrative components, including the need statement, project description, goals, timeline, and more. Workshop participants will get general tips for success and learn how to frame each section of the narrative for maximum impact.

Session 3: The Application Package. The third and final session covers methods for finding and evaluating grant opportunities and gives tips on preparing for grant writing to make the process as smooth as possible. Details to be covered include aligning project goals with funder goals, learning what documents are useful to have on file, and managing grant registrations.

This workshop is recommended for beginner to intermediate grant writing.
