What You'll Do:

Maintain and monitor the cleanliness and safety of recreation facilities.

Provide support for various recreation programs and events, ensuring smooth operations.

Engage with participants, providing excellent customer service and assisting with their needs.

Work alongside an enthusiastic team to create a clean, safe, and inviting space that reflects the heart of Newport.

Prior experience in a recreational or public service setting is a plus but not required!

Qualifications:
Minimum/Mandatory Education and Experience Requirements
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: At least six months of related experience in custodial or janitorial work.

Note: An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Knowledge Requirements
Familiarity with custodial tasks and duties.

Understanding of occupational hazards and safety standards related to cleaning and custodial work.

Skills Required
Proficient in using cleaning and janitorial equipment.

Competent in using personal computers, standard office equipment, and relevant software.

Strong time management, organization, and prioritization abilities.

Solid customer service and professionalism in all interactions.

Abilities Needed
Ability to build and maintain professional relationships with city staff, council members, external entities, and the public.

Capacity to quickly learn and apply city and departmental policies and procedures.

Attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Physically able to perform the required duties.

Competence in maintaining logs and records.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Special Licenses and Certifications

First Aid, CPR, and AED certification required within 30 days of hire.

Desirable Qualifications:

Experience or training in the care and maintenance of large facilities.

Familiarity with special flooring care techniques.

Entry-level maintenance skills and general facility upkeep knowledge.


Physical Demands:
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. The role demands physical mobility, including the ability to frequently lift or move materials up to 60 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Operating motorized vehicles is also required.
Manual dexterity and coordination are necessary approximately 60% of the time, especially when using equipment such as computers, telephones, standard office tools, and cleaning devices. Physical exertion is often required to move heavy objects, navigate tight spaces, and perform tasks in confined or awkward positions, including kneeling, climbing ladders, and prolonged standing.

Working Conditions / Environment:
Work is primarily performed indoors, but may involve exposure to fumes, chemicals, dust, and wet or slippery surfaces. The Building Attendant regularly handles hazardous cleaning chemicals, which can pose serious health risks if not used according to safety guidelines.

Additionally, the role may involve cleaning up biohazardous materials such as blood, vomit, and other bodily fluids, which can be unpleasant and require strict adherence to sanitation protocols and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
