Local Control Removed from Gun Bill
Language that would allow local governments from prohibiting firearms in their public buildings and immediately adjacent grounds was removed this week from House Bill 2005 without a hearing or discussion by the Senate Committee on Rules. Language limiting access to semi-automatic firearms was also pulled from the bill, leaving the prohibition on untraceable firearms the only remaining provision. The LOC supported allowing cities to make the decision on firearms in their buildings in a different bill that was amended into HB 2005. This measure was one of the key points of disagreement leading the walk-out by nine Republican and one non-affiliated senators, and the agreement to strip away local control was part of a larger agreement to get legislators back in the Capitol this week.
