OSHA Continues COVID-19 Rule Drafting Process

With a target implementation date of November 1, the drafting process continues for new Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) workplace rules related to COVID-19.  The rules, which have been revised significantly since first proposed, will require all employers to enforce social distancing, the use of face coverings, meet sanitation standards, and place additional requirements on specific industries and workplaces.  The LOC is working with public safety stakeholders to draft law enforcement rules and compliance standards that will protect employees and the public.  While the LOC anticipates additional revisions, cities should expect to be required to enforce the use of face coverings and social distancing in their workplaces, train employees on COVID-19 safety and conduct workplace risk assessments.  LOC staff will continue to work with OSHA to clarify these requirements.
